IRMCo guided FUNCEME, the institution responsible for environmental resources in Ceará State in the north-eastern semi-arid part of Brazil, to conduct a series of PPGIS events. Farmers and local water authorities discussed the challenges: in Forquilha these focused on recurring droughts and in Morada Nova on the outdated irrigation infrastructure which can no longer meet the increased demand of farmers. At each event, participants drew maps of an envisioned future in which water would be used more efficiently and more equitably. The SIRIUS toolset addresses improved irrigation water management through earth observation and participants took a keen interest in the satellite images provided on the occasion.
