XIFER L-IRDUM (TEETERING ON THE BRINK)

This 27-minute documentary, raises awareness on the importance of good governance of our coastal areas and brings into focus the existing legislative lacunas that impede the public from becoming active participants in the local planning process. It features many distinct speakers, and documents the results achieved through participatory, bottom-up activities organized throughout the Mare Nostrum project.  FUN AND GREEN ACTIVITIES WITH SCHOOLCHILDREN

Over 250 schoolchildren from the inner Grand Harbour were encouraged to explore the woodlands of Bieb is-Sultan, through mapping the number of trees, photographing the flora and fauna, drawing the landscape on a real easel, and by acting as journalists in front of a real cameraman. They especially enjoyed encountering the ‘pirate’, Karlu, who has been living there for 500 years, and presented each child and teacher with a medal that proudly says, ‘Protector of the Environment’. Watch a short video clip ‘Din l-Art Tagħna!’ and find out more about the Mare Nostrum project.

SIRIUS: PPGIS IN PILOT AREAS IN BRAZIL

IRMCo guided FUNCEME, the institution responsible for environmental resources in Ceará State in the north-eastern semi-arid part of Brazil, to conduct a series of PPGIS events.  Farmers and local water authorities discussed the challenges: in Forquilha these focused on recurring droughts and in Morada Nova on the outdated irrigation infrastructure which can no longer meet the increased demand of farmers.  At each event, participants drew maps of an envisioned future in which water would be used more efficiently and more equitably. The SIRIUS toolset addresses improved irrigation water management through earth observation and participants took a keen interest in the satellite images provided on the occasion.
